How to grow spring onions and get quick success

I feel the easiest to get a pot of spring onions going fast is to plant the roots from a bunch of supermarket's spring onions. I tried growing from seeds before, it just took too long.

This time round I cut off the root parts from supermarket's spring onions bunch, washed them and buried them in a round pot. Make sure to the root part is pointing downwards. With sufficient watering and full sun position, I am able to see good results in 3 weeks.

Spring onions do not normally attract aphids. Its natural odour rebels insects. Strangely this type of aphids does not fear the odour. The pot was disgustingly covered with the little buggers. I had no choice but resorted to using insects spray on my organic spring onions pot.

Self Watering Pot Makes A Big Difference

Round pot is the normal pot.
Rectangular pot is the self watering pot. The self watering pot is producing way more spring onions and they are taller and thicker than those in the round pot.

How to get spring onion seeds

Older spring onion will flower generously.
When you see the flower, don't cut it. Wait till it has blossom a bit more, then bury some seeds in the soil and you will see new baby spring onions in a few days.

This is interesting. I never know spring onion grows flowers. This pot is looking unhealthy. The leaves are no longer deep green.

I am not sure if it is the benefit of a self-watering pot or was it just more soil in a bigger plant that attributed to the baby spring onion's excellent growth just three weeks after moving them from round food containers to the self watering pot.

Lovely Spring Onion Pot

I planted a few more spring onion roots in the existing pot and they have grown nicely over the month. One of the most satisfying plant to grow, no bug attack! It's nice to have fresh spring onion handy for each cooking.

Took the spring onion seeds to germinate after 10 days inside plastic container greenhouse. I will wait for them to grow more before moving them to new home.

Growing Spring Onion

Today I have added spring onion to my balcony garden. I have not grown them from seeds. I bought a big bunch from the super market for my cooking and used the roots to make this pot.

To keep them standing upright I put a cut water bottle around them.

The chilli pot has some nutrients (egg-shells) added to it.
